Fun nautical fact:  Rope bracelets were originally made and used by sailors as good luck charms to protect them on the open seas.  We recommend setting sail while rocking the boat with style.  Add a pinch of punk to your rebellious side and shine with an inventive edge.  Pull spikey inspiration from an icon, aka Hermes stud bracelets and check out other spiked sensations from CC Skye and Rebecca Minkoff.   Get roped in while creating your own nautical punk piece with this rockin’ DIY.

To Create:  Gather a few Nantucket rope bracelets.  These were (and still are) a summer staple at local beach gift shops everywhere. Gather a variety of spikes and simply unscrew, push the screw end into the bracelet, and twist the back on.  Make sure your spikes are screwed in tight.

P.S.- This is bracelet is a classic Turk’s Head knot using rope. CLICK HERE to watch how to DIY your own!

Make your technicolor dreams come true with a DIY that takes the delicate simplicity of lace to a bold and vibrant place. The pretty prisms of Christopher Kane’s Resort 2012 collection prove that going full spectrum can literally be like wearing a good mood…so get a taste of the rainbow by creating this chic tinted tank!

To create:  Use a solid white tank as the canvas.  Find lace  that has a pattern you love- there are thousands of different options to discover! You will need about 1 yard total and can re-use the lace as a stencil once dry.  Place the lace over the tank, using a colorful fabric spray  to create a “stripe” across the top of the tee.  P.S.- be sure to cover the surface underneath with newspaper so the surface will not get sprayed.  Continue to spray the remainder of the tank, alternating colors and slightly overlapping them to give the colors a seamless and beautiful rainbow effect.

It’s the Fourth of July and to me that means trips to the beach, backyard entertaining and blasts of color! A truly crafty holiday host loves to impress with every last detail, and the cool curves of windswept driftwood are the perfect ingredient for bringing a bit of seaside style to your Independence Day fete. Take inspiration from nature and art to create a centerpiece that’s equal parts organic and elegant…with a modern pop of neon!
To create: gather driftwood from the beach, or perhaps find at your local craft or flower supply store .  Double knot brightly colored string to an area of the driftwood and wrap tightly.  Continue with your other colors of string and create a color block pattern in sporadic areas of the driftwood.  After  wrapping, double knot, snip with scissors, and use a dab of glue to seal.  To create an over-the-top tabletop candelabra, use strong wood glue to bond together, holding in place till dry.  You may even want to use a paper tape to hold together, which will act like a vice to hold during the dry time.  Lastly, attach mini tea lights onto the wood using super glue.

Declare your independence with a DIY that will light up your 4th of July!

Calling all flower girls!  Who isn’t wooed by the sights & scents of beautiful  blossoms?  Flowers play an indelible role in all of life’s special moments and celebrations…and whether adapted for bohemian festival flair, a non-traditional bridal headpiece or a delicate and romantic everyday accessory, floral crowns are an ever-growing symbol of ethereal beauty.  Pluck inspiration everywhere! From Laura Ashley glory days to the Dolce & Gabbana SS12 Collection and cover art for Lana Del Rey’s debut album. We teamed up with Who What Wear Beauty to show you how to put the petal to the metal and create your own wearable bouquet!
To create, twist large flowers together (use flowers that have bendable coated wire).   Begin to create a crown shape by twisting and connecting as you go. Incorporate smaller flowers and wrap around the base of the crown.   Sprinkle smaller accent flowers until you’re satisfied.  Make sure to try on as you go so it fits perfectly. Unleash your inner flower child as you crown yourself the queen of DIY!

And it’s not even my birthday…

Proving that good taste doesn’t stop at what we wear and how we live is literally a piece of cake!  We decided to stir things up this week and step into the kitchen to craft this special edition, edible DIY. Everyone knows that true style is all about layering mixed with little pops of surprise…so channel your inner Betty Crocker and sink your sweet tooth into this wildly colorful dessert that’s a feast for both the taste buds and the eyes!

To create, follow the directions on your cake mix and whip up a tasty batter.  We used two boxes of Betty Crocker French Vanilla, and dropped neon food coloring into four separate mixing bowls.  Follow baking instructions and let cool completely.  Slice cakes in half using a sharp serrated knife. We suggest cutting upside-down on paper plates.  This will raise the cake up slightly and make the cutting process easier.  Alternate cake layers, and spread a thin layer of frosting as you stack. Cover the entire cake with a generous coat of frosting to finish off.  Top it off with a cool marbleized effect.  CLICK HERE to watch the video showing how to swirl and create an out-of-this-world design!

P.S. - If you liked this little taste of culinary crafting, visit our friend Athena Calderone’s fantastic site eye-swoon for more inspiring recipes, and her unique take on design & style!

Summer is in full swing and we’re swooning over all things sun and sea. Some of fashion’s most beautiful patterns and palettes often take inspiration from Mother Nature, and while the slinky silk Prada halter Gwyneth Paltrow wore to the Met Ball left most murmuring about how revealing it was, its shimmering macro-paillette pockets left us swimming in aquatic visions of mermaids & buried treasures.  Our friends over at Who What Wear agreed so we then created this unsinkable DIY.
To create, start with larger paillettes and use a stapler to secure to skirt pocket by stapling at the top of the circle.  Mix colors and overlap as you go.  Once entire pocket is covered with the larger piallettes, cluster the smaller sequins together and add glue to cover any showing staples.  P.S- Feel free to use a needle and thread to add some stitches for extra reinforcement, after glue is dry.

Jump for rope! The sailor’s knot symbolizes a perfect marriage between form and function.  Crafty mariners not only used essential roping skills to safely set sail, they also made bracelets to show off their skills. These handcrafted wares were believed to bring good fortune, and were often given as gifts to their sweethearts upon returning to port.  Seafaring style is making major waves this season, with designers like Mara Hoffman and Holst + Lee adding a twist on tradition by layering in bright pops of color and statement hardware.  Tie one on with this DIY that will have you shouting Crafts Ahoy!To create, cut pieces of colorful rope into 1-yard. Gather both pieces, fold in half and create a flat knot in the center.   Add 2 flat knots on either side of the middle knot.  Infuse a pop color with Duck Tape (P.S.- we love NEON!) by wrapping small pieces between each knot.  Add additional Duck Tape accents as you finish off the necklace.  Also use to keep the rope’s ends from fraying.  Secure with a slip knot on the end and you’re ready to set sail in style!  P.S.- Learn how to tie all sorts of rad knots HERE!
