Great designers often draw inspiration from their cultural heritage, and none so consistently and vibrantly as Dolce & Gabbana. Season after season, their collections paint a colorful portrait of Italian culture, history and lifestyle, and the Sicilian-inspired looks of Spring/Summer 2013 are definitely no exception. Prints that recall street theater puppets and Italian plate motifs mix with beachy stripes to tell a chic seaside story…but as you might predict, our crafty eye was firmly focused on the adorably ornate raffia earrings that accented each look. Bring la dolce vita to your jewelry box with this DIY version we whipped up with Who What Wear!

To create: Use pliers to attach three jump rings to the bottom of each filigree earring, or create your own earring using a filigree finding and earring wire. Next, string an assortment of raffia pieces (approximately 4” to 6” long) through each jump ring. Create a tassel by folding each raffia bunch in half at the center; then wrap and knot another piece of raffia around the head of each bundle. String rose quartz, lapis, wooden beads and pom poms onto a piece of wire and loop through the filigree to embellish. Secure embellishment by knotting leftover wire to the backside of the filigree.

Sometimes you just need to have a girly moment. With Spring air flowing and flowers in bloom, it’s the perfect time to trade tough zippers for sweet ruffles, distressed denim for floral prints, and studded stacks for pretty pastel gems. Inspired by Tous’ colorful Bliss collection, wrist candy becomes wrist poetry with this DIY bracelet that reminds us why gems are truly, truly outrageous!

To create: Place each Swarovski Fancy Stone into a setting and secure by clamping prongs closed with pliers. Next, use a sharpie to draw oval shapes onto the plastic envelope, then use scissors to cut out each shape. Draw an oval  that is approximately 1/4” wider than the set stone to allow room for jump rings to attach. Dab a small amount of glue onto a craft stick and spread onto the plastic oval. Adhere this to the backside of your set stone. Allow the glue to dry completely, then pierce two holes on both sides of the plastic oval with a needle. Connect the plastic pieces with a jump ring and finish off by attaching a clasp.

Dear fashion, lately we’ve been noticing a special glow about you, and P.S.- we love it. From iridescent Dior frocks to Burberry’s shimmering trench coats, Spring style is getting its gleam on. Slip into your own shine with this sneaky DIY that cranks up the wattage on a simple pair of kicks.

To create: Cover the rubber rim and tag of the sneaker with paper tape. Next, use a foam brush to coat the shoe with a thin layer of acrylic paint (choose a paint color that compliments the iridescent film, as it will show through). Use scissors to cut 1” squares of the iridescent film, then crinkle each square. Spread mod podge on each piece of film and begin to layer onto surface of sneaker. Continue until the entire surface is covered in iridescent film. Finish and seal with another coat of mod podge, then trim any edges hanging over. Let dry completely before wearing.

They may as well alter that old saying to “look good from head to heel” because all eyes are on the artsy inches at the back of our shoes. Lucite blocks, metallic spikes and glam glitter have been taking footwear to bold new heights for the past few seasons. Along with WhoWhatWear, we’ve decided these bulbous glam Viktor & Rolf heels are the shoe crush of the season. Other designers that took part in this eye-popping trend include DVF, Hermès and Margiela. Step it up and have a ball with this j’amazing bauble heel!

To create: String silver beads onto wire in descending order; leave approximately 6 extra inches of wire, then use wire cutters to cut. Tightly wrap the extra wire slightly above the tip of the heel. Use a small piece of foil tape to hold wrapped wire in place. Use a heel liner to seal the opposite end of the wire to the inside of the shoe. Aim for a liner with padding to prevent the wire from rubbing against the back of your feet.

Did you know that Pantone chips evolved from a solution to help shoppers choose precise shades of pantyhose*? Fifty years later, Pantone’s universe of hues is the standard relied upon by every industry that deals with color; so, it was only a matter of time that they’d start defining trends as well. Pantone declared Emerald as 2013’s Color of the Year…and since we’re also celebrating the Year of The Snake, this week’s DIY links both milestones together and keeps you up-to-date with a tassel necklace that would leave even Queen Medusa herself green with envy.

To create: Add a wood bead to the top of each tassel. Separate links on theacrylic chain and link tassels on, placing longest tassel in the center of the chain. Knot each end of the chain with metallic rope (or opt for ribbon), and tie to finish off.

Glam headphones are the latest it-accessory; and just as you wouldn’t toss your favorite necklace or earrings into your purse, these gems also deserve a special vessel. These rose gold adorned Ella Earbuds by Frends are our current fav, and they’ve inspired us to create this on-the-go case that keeps our ear candy handy and untangled.

To create: Use a sharpie to trace the pattern onto the backside of a piece of leather, then cut out. Punch a hole, with a leather punch, large enough to allow the headphone jack to pass through. Stitch on snap closures using needle and thread. Finish it off by using a dab of glue to adhere a flat back stud to the opposing side of each snap for a fun detail.
P.S.- To keep all of your cords untangled, check out this 5 pack of Cord Tacos.

Gear up for the fringe frenzy! Inspired by decades of style, from flapper-esque fashions to bohemian 70’s vibes, designers from Saint Laurent to Ralph Lauren and Bottega Veneta sent fab fringed looks swinging and swooshing down the Spring runways. Leave it to Christian Louboutin to keep it refined and classy…and leave it to us to show you how to keep it affordable and crafty with a DIY take on their chic and playful Jimmynetta bootie.

To create: Cut 16 strips approximately 1/4” wide and 8” long from the leather trim. Next, fold the bundle of strips in half and use another strip of leather to wrap and knot around the top of the bundle to create a tassel. Leave 2” at the end of this leather strip; tape it on the inside of the boot using gorilla tape and press firmly.
