Salute your own DIY style by adding a brilliant spark of color to your day!
Make your technicolor dreams come true with a DIY that takes the delicate simplicity of lace to a bold and vibrant place. The pretty prisms of Christopher Kane’s Resort 2012 collection prove that going full spectrum can literally be like wearing a good mood…so get a taste of the rainbow by creating this chic tinted tank!
Summer is in full swing and we’re swooning over all things sun and sea. Some of fashion’s most beautiful patterns and palettes often take inspiration from Mother Nature, and while the slinky silk Prada halter Gwyneth Paltrow wore to the Met Ball left most murmuring about how revealing it was, its shimmering macro-paillette pockets left us swimming in aquatic visions of mermaids & buried treasures. Our friends over at Who What Wear agreed so we then created this unsinkable DIY.
To create, start with larger paillettes and use a stapler to secure to skirt pocket by stapling at the top of the circle. Mix colors and overlap as you go. Once entire pocket is covered with the larger piallettes, cluster the smaller sequins together and add glue to cover any showing staples. P.S- Feel free to use a needle and thread to add some stitches for extra reinforcement, after glue is dry.
There’s nothing more expressive than music and fashion…and when the two collide, inspiration and excitement thrive. If you’re lucky enough to attend this weekend’s Bonnaroo Music Festival in Manchester, Tennessee, swing by Gap’s late-night “Be Bright At Night” event to get crafty and personalize tees. Grab bold paints, patterns, stencils and more to discover why T-I-Y is the new D-I-Y!
Whether you’re attending a music fest or rockin’ out to your own playlist at home, get into the Summer DIY spirit by grabbing a Gap Favorite Tee and create an Aztec print inspired look. Cut up kitchen sponges in various sized triangles, dip into fabric paint and stamp your heart out.
P.S.- plan out your pattern before you start on a piece of paper or fabric scrap. Let dry completely, and then you’re ready to live by the words of The Beach Boys…”T-Shirts, cut-offs and a pair of thongs - we’ve been having fun all
Summer long”.
Be bold. Be you. Be jeweled! Our friends at Who What Wear and I agree that there’s no limit to the amount of sparkle you can put in your step this season.
Footwear, accessories, and everyday denim are getting a luxurious twist, as seen in Christopher Kane’s collection for J Brand, which is popping with outrageous patterns and overstated pizzazz. It’s time to take last year’s ordinary cutoffs to the cutting edge!
To create: Start with your favorite pair of jean cutoffs. Use a ruler and a pencil to create a grid pattern - size of grid and spacing depends on your preference (our lines are approx 1/2 an inch a part). Use a pencil to draw grid and then trace over with white puffy paint. Once dry use a real or fake flower to dip in fabric paint to create a stamp. Stamp the flower shape directly onto shorts in an alternating pattern. We used about 9-10 stamps per each side of short. Once paint is dry use fabric glue to secure large paillette sequins to the center of each “flower” shape. Once all are in place and dry then glue the larger flat back gems to the center of each sequin. Finally secure the smaller gems between each “flower” shape. (Approximately 5-6 per side). Allow to completely dry before wearing.
Nothing’s more radiant than a little gradient, so fade into Spring and tone up your wardrobe with a look that’s anything but shady. The ombre trend has spread from tresses to dresses, as seen in this season’s to-dye-for designs from Band of Outsiders, Theyskens’ Theory and Margiella. Tell your own short story by adding a splash of color to j’amazing lace!
To create: Start at the hem of your shorts and spray black fabric paint about four inches up. Add extra coats of paint closer to the hem, keeping the top clean and paint-free. Use a piece of paper to repel and block paint as you work your way up. Continue spraying, concentrating more on the bottom, until you achieve the desired ombre effect. Repeat on the reverse side, then hang until completely dry.
P is for Personality, which is precisely what printed jeans ooze of. Glide your way into this mainstream must-have with this denim DO! Get inspired by Balmain’s coveted graphic jean with a snakeskin twist. Bulgari’s Serpenti Collection of chic bracelets, bags, wallets and watches has slithered into our hearts, helping our style shine bright. Infuse a luxe snakeskin-esque pattern with a pop of print… it’s just what the DIY doctor ordered.
To create: use a solid colored pair of jeans for the base. Use scissors to cut zig zag shapes out of kitchen sponges and textured sponge cloths into 2” inch strips. Apply an even coat of fabric paint onto the sponge surface and press directly onto the denim starting from the outside edge. Hold sponge for a few seconds allowing paint to absorb into the material. Continue to create vertical patterns down the legs. For a more textured effect, overlap sponges as you go. Let one side dry completely before turning over to repeat the process on the back.
