I wanna be where the people are…DIYing beautiful mermaid chairs! Street art-inspired brand Stencil1’s scallop stencil is the perfect way to add some positive patterns to your life. Founder Ed Roth shows us with his stencils, which won Product of the Year Award, how to turn this simple canvas beach chair into an underwater ombre fantasy.

To create: Remove the canvas fabric from the beach chair frame. Starting at the top left corner, place the scallop stencil and hold it in place with a light coat of tacky spray and painter’s tape. Paint in the scallop shapes with a light silver fabric paint. Let dry for a few minutes then remove the scallop stencil and place beside the painted area. Continue this step until the you’ve completed painting the top row of scallops silver. Place the stencil a few scallop rows lower and starting from left to right, paint the scallops a light mint color. Blend the silver and mint with a dry brush. Continue painting and mixing the hues until you’ve painted the entire surface, paint your lightest hue first and your darkest last. Let dry completely then place the fabric back on the frame.
